At TBK, we admit 6th kyu / karate green belt and higher to Kobudo weapons class. A martial artist should have control of stances and basic movements before swinging a weapon. Kobudo or traditional weapons classes usually start with the wooden bo staff, before teaching shorter wooden or steel weapons including tonfa, sai, nunchaku, and kama (a bladed weapon). Each type of weapon has its own set of techniques, rules, and sequences for proper usage. Learning the basics of each weapon is essential before progressing to more advanced levels.
Ages 8 and up and green belt in karate (6th kyu and higher) may start training weapons at TBK dojo. Martial arts weapons classes typically attract people of any age and skill level, including beginners. People with a background in martial arts, as well as those looking to learn something new, often attend these classes. They are also popular among people seeking to improve their physical fitness and find an exciting way to stay active.
It is important to get a weapon properly sized (length and weight) for the student. Before you begin, make sure to understand the proper length of a long weapon sized to your height and proper length of a short weapon sized to your forearm. Our instructors can help you use or buy a weapon of the proper size. No additional protective gear is needed. Steel sai and blades on the kama are usually dull, and should not puncture or cut skin if the weapon if handled correctly. It is wise to practice weapons outdoors to prevent damage to the weapon, a ceiling or floor, when occasional clashes or loss of control occurs.
At our facility, martial arts weapons classes begin at age 8 and up. and green belt/6th kyu and higher.
Traditional weapons are made of wood and steel and historically come from the farming and fishing communities of Okinawa. Modern weapons use center around competition and performance and crowd control. For example, modern staff (long weapon) may be made of aluminum and tapered to a sharp points at their end for performance reasons. The short weapon tonfa has been adapted by military and police forces for use in crowd or criminal control.
It is recommended to practice with martial arts weapons at least twice a week, in class and at home. This helps to keep your skills sharp and allows you to become more proficient in their use. Additionally, it is important to receive instruction from a qualified instructor who can provide guidance and feedback on your technique.
