If you are new to karate or new to our dojo
What to Bring and Wear to Best Karate
On your first day of class, wear a pair of sweatpants (leggings or shorts) and a T-shirt. Jewelry should be removed from neck, wrist, ankles, and fingers to prevent injury or breakage. Long hair and long bangs should be tied or pinned.
We have men’s and women’s dressing rooms for you to change in. We have Gi’s for sale at the dojo. Traditionally, females wear white shirt, camisole or sports bra plus underpants under their gi; males wear only underpants.
What to say when you walk into our dojo
You will hear students and instructors yell “Ossu!” (“OOOOSS”). Ossu is an all-purpose spirited greeting that means “Hello, Thank You, I’m doing fine, and I understand!”
There will usually be an instructor (Sensei) to meet you at the door. However, if the instructor is teaching on the floor, you can wait until there is a break in the action or between classes to approach him or her. Feel free to ask the other parents (spectators) any questions.
Let him or her know you are there to enjoy a trial class. The Sensei will give you the necessary information and answer any questions you may have.
What to do as a first-time visitor to Best Karate
There will usually be an instructor (Sensei) to meet you at the door. However, if the instructor is teaching on the floor, you can wait until there is a break in the action or between classes to approach him or her. Feel free to ask the other parents (spectators) any questions.
When class begins, other students will help you with dojo manners, including traditional bowing in and warming up. As in most traditional Japanese dojos, we bow when stepping on the floor, at the beginning of class, at the end of class, and when stepping off the floor.
What to expect
Karate is a physical fitness activity that can be adapted to anyone’s level of ability and experience. During the first week you will learn our four major techniques — Kicking, punching, blocking and striking. Along with these, you will learn a few stances such as front stance and horse-riding stance. Workouts are rigorous, fun and challenging. Instructors pay a lot of attention to every karate technique, focus on the trunk of the body where physical strength is generated, promote appropriate attitude and posture, demonstrate fitness and conditioning, and impart Japanese karate culture and history.

- Our regular holidays when the dojo is closed are: New Year’s Day, Easter weekend, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. We usually have a Kick or Treat Halloween training open to members and their guests, not on Halloween day though.
- The Dojo is open on all school breaks, even when Wake County has teacher workdays and holidays.
- The next quarterly Belt Test is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9. Generally, a new student should be training a minimum of 3 months or 24 classes before testing. Tests are open for viewing by family and friends of the people testing, other dojo members. Please come and support others.
