Every student at Triangle’s Best Karate trains for the same reason: to become a better version of themselves. Competing on our team is simply the next step, a chance to take everything you’ve built on the mat and test it, sharpen it, and grow from it alongside teammates who push each other to be their best. Whether you dream of standing on a podium at AAU Nationals or just want to see how far your training has come, our Competition Team welcomes students of every rank and age who are ready to challenge themselves.
Why Compete?
Competition isn’t about being the best in the room — it’s about becoming better than you were yesterday. At Triangle’s Best Karate, we believe competing is one of the fastest ways to build the confidence, focus, and resilience that carry over into everything else in life: school, work, and relationships.
Stepping onto the competition floor puts your skills to the test in a way that class alone can’t. You learn to perform under pressure, handle nerves, accept feedback graciously, and celebrate both wins and losses with the same good sportsmanship we teach every day in the dojo. It’s B.E.S.T. Karate in action — Better Education with a Strong Tradition — and it’s why so many of our students say competing changed the way they see themselves, both on and off the mat.
The Benefits of Competing
Performing kata, kumite, or weapons in front of judges and a crowd builds a kind of self-assurance that’s hard to earn anywhere else.
Preparing for a tournament means setting a goal and training with purpose, a habit that pays off far beyond karate.
Competitors learn to win with humility and lose with grace, and to genuinely celebrate their teammates’ successes.
Our competition team trains, travels, and celebrates together, many of our strongest friendships were formed at tournaments.
Many of our competitors go on to become team captains, junior instructors, and mentors for newer students.
From local AAU events in Raleigh to Regionals and the AAU National Championship, competing opens the door to travel and new communities of martial artists all over the country and world.
How to Join the Competition Team
Joining is simple — there’s no tryout and no minimum belt rank required:
Let any of our instructors know you’re interested, and they’ll help you decide which events fit you best (kata, kumite, and/or weapons/kobudo).
We hold dedicated competition team practices to work on ring-ready skills, rules, and etiquette in addition to regular class.
Most new competitors start at a local tournament, such as our own Pink Belt Tournament in Raleigh, before moving on to AAU State, Regional, or National events.
Your instructor will let you know what sparring gear or equipment (if any) you’ll need for your first tournament.
FAQs
Not at all. AAU karate tournaments are divided by age, sex, and experience level (Beginner through Advanced), so students of every rank — from white belt to black belt — compete against others at a similar stage.
Completely. Almost every competitor felt the same way before their first tournament. Our coaches will walk you through exactly what to expect, and you’ll be surrounded by teammates who remember exactly how you feel.
Depending on the tournament, you can compete in kata (forms), kumite (sparring), and weapons/kobudo. Many students start with just one event and add more as they gain experience.
Costs vary by tournament and typically cover event registration and, for larger AAU competitions, an annual AAU membership. Your instructor can give you exact pricing for any event you’re considering.
AAU karate welcomes competitors of nearly all ages, from young children through adults, with divisions grouped by age and experience so everyone competes on a level playing field.
As often as you’d like. We host and attend local events like the Pink Belt Tournament throughout the year, plus AAU State Championships, Regionals, and the AAU National Championship for students ready to compete at a higher level.
It depends on the event — kata typically requires just your uniform, while kumite may require approved sparring gear. Your instructor will make sure you’re properly equipped well before your first tournament.
Every competitor’s first tournament is a learning experience, not a final exam. Our coaches care about your effort and growth far more than a medal, and many of our strongest competitors didn’t place until their second or third event.
